Orbital

(2024, ongoing)

Xue has long been fascinated by how electrons move within the confined space of atoms and molecules. In quantum mechanics, their presence is never fixed; they exist as electron clouds: ephemeral, shifting, and unpredictable.

Using ignited incense as a light source, the artist guides its glowing tip through improvised gestures that evoke imagined electron orbitals. Each act of burning, driven by electrons seeking more stable energy states, embodies both destruction and creation, a moment of light sedimenting onto photographic paper in the darkroom. Behind every glimmer lies a cascade of electron rearrangements and transitions.

The resulting luminograms are not scientific diagrams, but residues of movement—layered, fluid, and erratic, like the electrons themselves. The trajectories here are the memory of the electrons vertically approaching the blue.
